Sinopsis:
Berlatar belakang pembentukan National Southwest Associated University (umumnya dikenal sebagai ‘Lianda’), ceritanya mengikuti para intelektual di Beiping dan pilihan serta pengorbanan yang dibuat oleh dua generasi untuk menjaga api peradaban tetap hidup.
Beiping jatuh ke tangan pasukan Jepang pada tahun 1937. Beberapa universitas utara memutuskan untuk pindah ke selatan ke Changsha, namun perang segera pecah. Meng Hai Tang seorang dosen di Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Nasional Peking, harus melarikan diri bersama para mahasiswa muda tersebut. Untuk melestarikan warisan nasional mereka, sekelompok intelektual Cina datang untuk membentuk Universitas Asosiasi Barat Daya Nasional (“Lianda”) saat berada di pengasingan.
Hai Tang dan Zhang Qi jatuh cinta. Setibanya di Chongqing, mereka saling mendukung dalam mendirikan sekolah kedokteran di bawah Universitas Peking. Namun, Hai Tang diberhentikan dari posisinya. Pasangan itu melakukan perjalanan ke barat ke Kunming, menikah dan mendirikan kembali sekolah kedokteran di Mengzi. Selama Pertempuran Burma Utara dan Yunnan Barat, Hai Tang dan Zhang Qi memimpin para siswa untuk memberikan bantuan medis. Tidak peduli seberapa keras, ini adalah orang-orang yang mewujudkan semangat universitas yang tak kenal takut dari pemuda kontemporer.
